Terms of Service

Please read these terms carefully. They explain what Legacy Vault is for, what we expect from you, and how we protect both you and the people you nominate.

Last updated: April 2026 · Governing law: England & Wales

1. The spirit of this service

Legacy Vault was built to help people protect what matters and share it — on their own terms — with the people they love and trust. It exists for moments of genuine care: making sure your family has what they need, leaving a message for someone important, protecting documents that matter to the people who will miss you.

We sincerely hope this service is never used to hurt anyone. If you are considering using Legacy Vault to distress, manipulate, intimidate, or settle a grievance with another person, we ask you not to. That is not what it is for, and it is not who we want to help.

These terms exist to make that expectation formal and enforceable, and to protect both Legacy Vault and the trusted contacts who use this platform in good faith.

2. Who may use Legacy Vault

Legacy Vault is available to individuals aged 18 and over. By creating an account, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old and that the information you provide during registration is accurate. Accounts created on behalf of businesses or organisations are subject to separate commercial terms.

3. Acceptable use

You agree to use Legacy Vault only for lawful purposes and in a way that does not infringe the rights of others. In particular, you must not:

  • Upload, store, or share content that is defamatory, threatening, harassing, or designed to cause distress or harm to any person.
  • Use the trusted contact or release feature as a vehicle for manipulation, coercion, revenge, or spite — including but not limited to configuring a release intended to embarrass, threaten, or harm a recipient after your death or incapacity.
  • Store or share illegal content, including material that infringes copyright, constitutes fraud, or is prohibited under the laws of England and Wales.
  • Impersonate any person or misrepresent your identity or your relationship with any trusted contact.
  • Attempt to circumvent any security, access control, or authentication mechanism in the service.
  • Use automated means to access the platform other than through our published API with prior written permission.

Breach of these terms may result in immediate account suspension, permanent termination, and — where conduct may constitute a criminal offence — referral to the relevant authorities.

4. Your responsibility as an account owner

You, the account holder, are solely responsible for all content stored in your vault and all content released to your trusted contacts. By uploading or sharing content, you confirm that:

  • You own the content or have the right to store and share it.
  • Sharing the content with your nominated trusted contacts is lawful and appropriate.
  • The content does not contain personal data about third parties in a way that violates their privacy rights under UK GDPR.
  • The content is not intended to cause distress, harm, or legal harm to any recipient.

Legacy Vault does not review, moderate, or pre-approve content stored in private vaults. We are not liable for any content shared between account owners and their trusted contacts.

5. Notice to trusted contacts

This section is important if you have been nominated as a trusted contact.

The documents, messages, and information available in your portal were provided and configured entirely by the account owner — not by Legacy Vault. We are a neutral delivery platform. We do not read, review, or endorse any content that passes through the service between an account owner and their trusted contacts.

Your access is voluntary. If you have been nominated as a trusted contact and do not wish to receive documents or messages through this service, you are under no obligation to proceed. Simply close your portal link and take no further action. You will not be penalised in any way.

Legacy Vault is not responsible for the content you receive. We make no representations about the accuracy, legality, or emotional content of any documents or messages shared by account owners. If the content you receive causes you distress, we are sorry — but liability for that content rests with the person who uploaded it.

If you believe content is harmful or illegal, please contact us at legal@legacyvault.app and, where appropriate, the relevant authorities. We will cooperate fully with any lawful investigation.

6. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Legacy Vault (and its directors, employees, and agents) shall not be liable for:

  • Any content uploaded, stored, or shared by account owners.
  • Any emotional distress, psychological harm, financial loss, or dispute arising from content that a third party chose to share through this platform.
  • Any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss arising from your use of, or inability to use, the service.
  • Loss of data caused by events outside our reasonable control, including hardware failure, cyberattack, or force majeure events.

Our total aggregate liability to you in connection with these terms or the service shall not exceed the total fees you have paid to us in the 12 months preceding the relevant claim. Where you have used a free plan, our aggregate liability shall not exceed £50.

Nothing in these terms excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under English law.

7. Account termination

You may close your account at any time from the settings page. We may suspend or terminate your account immediately, without prior notice, if we have reasonable grounds to believe you have breached these terms — particularly the acceptable use provisions. Upon termination, your data will be scheduled for permanent deletion in line with our data retention policy as described in the Transparency & Security Policy.

8. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify registered users by email and update the “last updated” date above. Continuing to use the service after notification constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms. If you do not agree to any change, please stop using the service and close your account.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising under or in connection with these terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

10. Contact

Questions about these terms, reports of misuse, or legal correspondence should be directed to legal@legacyvault.app.
